This week, Google is holding its annual developer conference in San Francisco. But, where past conferences were focused on major hardware and\/or software announcements, the 2013 conference is focused on improvements to Google Play apps and core services.<\/p>\n

According to an article on Time.com<\/a>, \u201cThe company isn\u2019t trying new things, but refining old ones. It\u2019s not announcing new hardware, but touting the devices it already has. New hardware and software will come, probably later this year \u2014 but only after Google puts spit shine on all its apps and services.\u201d<\/p>\n

You might expect techies to be disappointed with so many seemingly small-bore changes \u2014 especially in a culture where the \u201cnext big thing\u201d is always The. Next.Big.Thing. But Google recognizes that small innovations\u2014improving its map app, introducing a rival music subscription service and (my favorite) new cards for Google Now \u2014 are essential to gaining and <\/i>restoring consumer trust.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t a paean to Google\u2019s awesomeness. As they\u2019ve become a colossus, it\u2019s increasingly hard for them to \u201cDon\u2019t be evil.\u201d \u00a0But companies should still emulate Google\u2019s commitment to constant innovation.<\/p>\n
