If you insist on an answer, the respondent will choose one at random, making your data less trustworthy. At best, the survey could include an option to account for the \u201cI never eat here\u201d responses \u2014 and then you need to find ways to work around those \u201cNevers\u201d when you analyze the results.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plus, every researcher wants to\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Keeping Surveys Short \u2013 But Not TOO Short\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sogolytics.com\/blog\/keeping-surveys-short-but-not-too-short\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">minimize the time respondents spend on a survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s silly to waste someone\u2019s time answering an irrelevant question (particularly when you multiply that time by hundreds of respondents), and it can irk people enough to make them quit. <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>In other words: Don\u2019t ask dumb questions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The obvious solution is to control the survey flow, so that respondents are only asked about favorite McDonald\u2019s food items if they eat at McDonald\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"section-2\">How Survey Branching and Skip Logic Control the Flow<\/h2>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a good online survey tool \u2013 by which, of course, I mean Sogolytics \u2013 you have several ways to control <\/span><strong><i>survey branching<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, sometimes called <\/span><strong><i>skip logic<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The simplest way to do this is to show-or-skip an entire survey page based on answers to a single question (\u201cHave you purchased flowers online?\u201d where the YES answer directs respondents to a page full of questions about their buying experience) or based on the answers to multiple questions (the secondary page is shown only if the respondent purchased flowers online <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is female). Everyone else jumps over that buying-experience page \u2013 invisibly, from the respondent\u2019s point of view; they don\u2019t know that page exists.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s an ideal solution when you have a package of related questions you can put on a single survey page. But it\u2019s problematical in other situations, such as a single follow-up, where adding another page may be visual overkill. For example, consider these questions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you willing to volunteer? If yes, please provide your email ID.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did you use the free version before signing up for a paid subscription? If yes, what influenced your decision to sign up for a paid version?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much would you expect to pay for the type of widget we just described? If respondent selects any of the three more-expensive choices, ask a question about payment options.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How did you learn about our service? If the answer chosen is \u201creferral,\u201d show a text box to ask for the referral\u2019s name and email ID.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>When to Use <strong>Single Question Branching<\/strong> Instead<\/h3>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For these situations, consider using <\/span><strong><i>single question branching<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which shows or hides questions on the same or subsequent pages based on answers to a designated question.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"section-3\">Setting Up <strong>Single Question Branching<\/strong> in Sogolytics<\/h2>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how to set it up.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>Design your survey the way you ordinarily would. Include all the questions you intend to display only under certain conditions, placing them in the order you want them to appear.<\/p>\n<p>In the <strong>Design<\/strong> tab, navigate to <strong>Project Logic<\/strong> in the left-hand menu and select <strong>Single-Question Branching<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-66582\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/SQB1.png\" alt=\"Single Question Branching Sogolytics\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>This opens the branching panel, where you&#8217;ll define your logic rules. Start by selecting the <strong>trigger question, <\/strong>the question whose answer determines what happens next. In this example, that&#8217;s the question asking whether the respondent upgraded their subscription.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Next, select the <strong>answer option<\/strong> that should activate the rule (for example, &#8220;Yes&#8221;). Then define the action: direct respondents who answered &#8220;Yes&#8221; to the follow-up question asking why they upgraded, while respondents who answered &#8220;No&#8221; skip past it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You can add multiple rules within the same branching setup to handle different answer paths. Each rule follows the same IF\/THEN structure: if a respondent selects a specific answer, they&#8217;re directed to a specific destination.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Once your rules are saved, use <strong>Preview<\/strong> mode to test the flow. Selecting &#8220;Yes&#8221; for the trigger question should surface the follow-up; selecting &#8220;No&#8221; should skip it entirely, invisible to the respondent.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s possible to get \u201cfancy\u201d with this feature, such as displaying the follow-up question inside the criteria question, but the basics are powerful enough.
