But with all the expense and effort to administer employee surveys, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/sap\/2013\/10\/23\/lousy-response-rates-on-your-employee-survey-heres-how-the-best-leaders-get-great-participation-every-time\/#da99c2b151a4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">average employee survey response rate is a meager 30%-40%<\/a>, and without employee participation, the survey is worthless! If so, what have you done with the information?\u201d \u201cIf you haven\u2019t done anything, why should I waste my time when you\u2019re not going to use the data? What\u2019s the point of participating?\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>So here are a few of the tactics we have uncovered over the years that will help you \u201cshake things up\u201d and get the attention of your employees:<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>Invite employees to participate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As mentioned earlier, too often nothing happens with a survey, or employees don\u2019t believe anything positive will happen. One big reason for this is because the action plan usually lands on the manager\u2019s desk and it falls to the bottom of their priority list. You can easily fix this problem by involving employees in the process.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>Ensure anonymity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"How to create Anonymous Survey\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sogolytics.com\/help\/how-to-create-anonymous-survey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Concerns about anonymity<\/a> are one of the biggest reasons for low response rates and inaccurate data. For example, if employees are worried that the responses won\u2019t be anonymous, chances are they will report less strong opinions about their boss than they truly feel\u2014or may not respond at all. Make it very clear that everyone\u2019s answer is 100% anonymous and that managers will never see it.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>Communicate, communicate, communicate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Explain the point of the survey and that you value their opinions and want them to be part of the process. If they complete the survey will it improve their work experience, impact the type of recognition they receive, or allow them to influence the direction of the company? If your employees know what they\u2019re going to get out of it, they\u2019ll be more likely to provide honest feedback. If your organization has participated in an <a href=\"\/employee-engagement-survey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">employee engagement survey<\/a> in the past, relay the positive outcomes that resulted from it to motivate employees to participate again.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>Avoid survey fatigue<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Studies have shown that employees are more sensitive than consumers to survey length, and that survey length is one of the main reasons for not responding. Make survey questions easy to understand and the survey easy to take. Give managers just enough data while trying not to disturb employees.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>Limit open-ended questions to two or three precisely worded questions that encourage honest, candid reflection on organizational strengths and areas of opportunity. While open-ended questions are excellent tools to use to capture employees\u2019 true thoughts and feelings, a survey with too many open-ended questions will not be well received.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h2><strong>Post-Survey Communication<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>Share the results quickly<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If your employees took the time to respond to your survey, you need to show appreciation and thank them\u2014and don\u2019t wait too long! At the very least, thank them for participating and let them know that you are listening and will take their responses seriously.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>Share something positive<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As humans, our tendency is to focus on the negatives (negativity bias). But it\u2019s important to highlight the positive feedback that comes out of the survey. This will help employees take pride in their organization and be pleased that they took the time to complete the survey.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>Keep employees informed along the way<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After you\u2019ve decided on a few things to implement, articulate them and ask employees for further feedback.
