Don\u2019t you value when someone gets to the point?<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>On Friday, my colleague saw that #SurviveAHorrorMovieIn5Words was trending. Naturally, she brought it to my attention immediately. The challenge did, in fact, have my name all over it.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>Melissa. Writer. English teacher. Poet. Instagram captioneer. Pun-isher. Not me\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0the list. It\u2019s a challenge. Do what you came to do and get out. Be clear, be clever, be done.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other than haiku and <a title=\"Hallowen Webinar\" href=\"https:\/\/calendly.com\/webinar-book\/better-surveys-through-scary-movies-tricks-and-treats\/\">our Halloween webinar<\/a> about scary movie cliches, what popped up in my head was the recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.twitter.com\/official\/en_us\/topics\/product\/2017\/Giving-you-more-characters-to-express-yourself.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twitter decision<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to pilot doubling the character count for tweets. If you missed it, Twitter\u2019s launched 280-character limits for certain users for testing and exploration.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>Are you one of these doubled-up users? I\u2019m certainly not. If anything, I\u2019d look to join the half-off plan. (#SurviveTwitterIn70Characters, anyone?)<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>I work at a tech company. I understand that testing matters. But come on. What about Twitter usage today suggests that more is better? Double the bad behavior, double the advertising? Halloween or not, there\u2019s some scary stuff out there.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve ever launched a survey and given a giant text box with a nearly limitless character count, you\u2019ll know what I mean. A good question can help [<\/span><a title=\"Halloween Survey\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sogolytics.com\/survey\/form?k=RQsXSUPsURWsPsPsP&amp;lang=0&amp;data= target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Share your favorite Halloween joke! <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vs. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anything else?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">], but simply leaving enough space to mess around in can inspire some unexpected behavior. I once reviewed results of a survey in which a student had used a particularly generously sized text box to write out the lyrics of the Narwahl Song. (If you\u2019re not familiar with this particular piece, I refer you to YouTube. I&#8217;m not giving you a direct link because I don&#8217;t want to be held responsible for the earworm.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) You might not be surprised to know that this addition didn\u2019t offer much insight to the survey administrators.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s the point? Stick to the point.
