{"id":4321,"date":"2018-02-15T12:49:34","date_gmt":"2018-02-15T17:49:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sogolytics.com\/blog\/?p=4321"},"modified":"2022-12-05T02:03:45","modified_gmt":"2022-12-05T07:03:45","slug":"normal-ish-ii-develop-the-full-data-picture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sogolytics.com\/blog\/normal-ish-ii-develop-the-full-data-picture\/","title":{"rendered":"Normal-ish II: Develop The Full (Data) Picture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cNormal\u201d, you say?<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>This week, we\u2019re breaking down \u201cnormal\u201d from two angles that get researchers all tangled up.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In <a title=\"Normal-ish (I): Tend Your Trends\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sogolytics.com\/blog\/normal-ish-1-trend-analysis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Part I<\/a>, I pointed out that knowing one measurement <strong><i style=\"font-family: sans-serif; font-size: medium; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: normal;\">at one moment in time<\/i><\/strong> doesn\u2019t necessarily give enough context to figure out whether that measurement is good or bad, hot or cold, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Into Part II, the emphasis shifts to the issues with over-reliance on <strong><i style=\"font-family: sans-serif; font-size: medium; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: normal;\">one<\/i> <\/strong>measurement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Get to the point\u2026 and the other points, too!<\/h2>\n<p>One measurement is great, but developing the full picture requires multiple measurements from different perspectives.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p><b><i>A personal example:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Remember the physical I mentioned in <a title=\"Normal-ish (I): Tend Your Trends\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sogolytics.com\/blog\/normal-ish-1-trend-analysis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Part I<\/a>? Sure, it turned out that my temperature was normal-for-me. Still, just having a \u201cnormal\u201d temperature doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re healthy.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>While it certainly takes more time to answer all of those questions, to stare into bright lights and to get banged in the knee with a rubber mallet, it\u2019s probably worthwhile. One data point does not a physical make.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>Especially because I\u2019m no medical expert, I appreciate the thoroughness of my team of healthcare professionals. GPA? Attendance? Involvement in extracurriculars? Internships?<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p><a title=\"DCPS Teacher Survey\" href=\"https:\/\/wamu.org\/story\/18\/01\/25\/dcps-teachers-feel-pressure-pass-students-teacher-union-survey-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A recent survey<\/a> of District of Columbia Public Schools teachers showed that teachers have been feeling pressure to keep up stats on one key measurement prioritized by the system: graduation rates. Following <a title=\"DCPS HIgh School Investigation\" href=\"https:\/\/wamu.org\/story\/17\/11\/28\/really-happened-ballou-d-c-high-school-every-senior-got-college\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an investigation<\/a> into allegedly inflated graduation rates at one high school, this survey collected feedback from 616 DCPS teachers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>Survey results showed that teachers felt pressure to ignore important facts like attendance, class performance and grades, and even violation of official policies, all with the goal in mind of passing students and improving the graduation rates.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>As a teacher, I\u2019m very sympathetic to the challenges of balancing a student\u2019s needs and external priorities. As a researcher, I know it\u2019s impossible for a school district \u2014 a unique and complex organism \u2014 to judge its success on one data point.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>From graduation rates to standardized test scores, teachers around the world regularly face the demand to demonstrate measurable success. Still, when these measurements are applied by those outside of the classroom, it can be a challenge to keep the real focus on student success \u2014 from every angle.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>Coming to a conclusion \u2014 you\u2019re healthy, your school system is successful \u2014 isn\u2019t based on some magical number of data points. Still, the more angles you can capture, the better perspective you\u2019ll develop.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>Now, excuse me while I head out into this beautiful, sunny day.
