{"id":47075,"date":"2019-12-03T15:19:42","date_gmt":"2019-12-03T20:19:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sogolytics.com\/blog\/?p=47075"},"modified":"2025-04-29T03:23:36","modified_gmt":"2025-04-29T07:23:36","slug":"sogogetup-employee-wellbeing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sogolytics.com\/blog\/sogogetup-employee-wellbeing\/","title":{"rendered":"SogoGetUp: &#8216;Tis The Season to Move It Move It"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re down, it\u2019s hard to get up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not a post about <a href=\"https:\/\/sogosurvey.com\/blog\/prioritizing-your-employees-mental-health-and-work-life-balance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">prioritizing employees&#8217; mental health<\/a>, though we\u2019re totally in favor of that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This isn\u2019t even so much a post about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sogolytics.com\/survey-templates\/employee\/employee-work-life-balance-survey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">work-life balance<\/a>, though we\u2019re all about that, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Really, this is a post simply about getting up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>The Most Dangerous Time of the Year<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Thanksgiving &#8212; after Halloween, really &#8212; we head into one of the most delicious times of the year. Gingerbread houses, cookie exchanges, and stockings stuffed with goodies are everywhere. Plus, with all the visiting and socializing, add on more sweets and savory goodies, all your favorite drinks, and it\u2019s no wonder we\u2019re overcome.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I hear you &#8212; some of you, anyway &#8212; pointing out that there are plenty of chances to be active year round, including festive 5ks like a \u201cTurkey Trot\u201d or \u201cRun with Santa\u201d&#8230; You\u2019re so right! Those can be fun ways for families and friends to get motivated and get moving, no matter the weather. If you\u2019re in it, win it!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But let\u2019s be real. For many of us, the holidays are about pigging out and vegging out and chilling out &#8212; not so much about strict goals and guidelines for nutrition and exercise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Who left these cookies in the break room?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And if you think this delightful stagnation only takes place outside of work hours, come on. You know how it works. Holiday parties. Leftovers you just can\u2019t keep at home &#8212; for your own safety. Presents and cookies and those beautifully wrapped festive chocolates\u2026\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plus, with so much extracurricular excitement happening and the push to get more done in a shorter timeframe, it\u2019s hard to even imagine stuffing more into your schedule. The workday is finite, after all, and work so often comes first.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But let&#8217;s not blame it all on the holidays! In general, our increasingly passive lifestyles are the underlying issue. The World Health Organization says that globally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/physical-activity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1 in 4 adults is not active enough<\/a>, and that insufficient physical activity is one the leading risk factors for death worldwide. Yikes!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-59793 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sogolytics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/pexels-polina-tankilevitch-4187560-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"cookies in breakroom healthy habits at work\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sogolytics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/pexels-polina-tankilevitch-4187560-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/www.sogolytics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/pexels-polina-tankilevitch-4187560-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.sogolytics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/pexels-polina-tankilevitch-4187560-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.sogolytics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/pexels-polina-tankilevitch-4187560-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.sogolytics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/pexels-polina-tankilevitch-4187560-33x50.jpg 33w, https:\/\/www.sogolytics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/pexels-polina-tankilevitch-4187560.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px\" \/><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>SoGoGetUp\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few months ago, with many of these same ideas in mind, we implemented #SoGoGetUp, a daily reminder to ourselves to be active. We have a dedicated Slack channel to encourage each other, as well as a self-appointed facilitator each day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If all goes well, our facilitator sends out a note announcing the #SoGoGetUp time of the day, then everyone who\u2019s interested and available jumps up at the right time and heads out. We\u2019re lucky enough to have both indoor and outdoor space that allows us to get up and move &#8212; no excuses, no matter the weather!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, depending on the facilitator of the day, we might do yoga, some focused stretching exercises, light aerobic activity, or a quick walk. It\u2019s nice to get some new ideas from each other &#8212; whether it\u2019s from personal experience or a quick YouTube search! &#8212; and the variety keeps it engaging.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally, we wrap up with a brisk walk, which allows us the opportunity for a casual catch-up. While some conversations are certainly work related, participants generally take the opportunity to refocus on something else during this time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At most, these sessions take about 10-15 minutes, which really isn\u2019t that much time. We could easily spend that much time getting a cup of coffee or chatting around the proverbial water cooler, but #SoGoGetUp encourages us to stop, reset, and boost our physical, mental, emotional, and social health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>But\u2026<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Okay, you\u2019re right. It doesn\u2019t always work out that way. Sometimes we\u2019re too busy, sometimes we forget, and sometimes we just stay down. But we\u2019re working on it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m not saying that this is the right program for you and your employees, but this might be the perfect time of year to build a better understanding of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sogolytics.com\/employee-experience-survey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">employee well-being<\/a> and figure out what will work for your team. SHRM and other organizations offer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shrm.org\/hr-today\/trends-and-forecasting\/special-reports-and-expert-views\/Documents\/Promoting-Employee-Wellbeing.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">great suggestions to get started<\/a>, but only your team knows what will really stick.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Happy holidays!
