There are exit polls, entrance polls, popularity polls, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a world full of dazzling surveying possibilities like the research-favorite survey or the newly fashionable CX, polls can seem quite simple. It would be a mistake to underestimate the importance and value of polls, however.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re wondering what makes a poll different from a survey\u2014surveys have multiple questions and are specifically designed to delve deeper into a topic. In contrast, polls are generally just one question.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many organizations around the world specialize in polling; over a dozen of which are in the United States alone. Not the first, he was, perhaps, one of the most famous pollsters. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/4568359\/george-gallup-polling-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TIME<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> May 1948 cover story named Gallup the \u201cBabe Ruth of the polling profession.\u201d During his time editing the Daily Iowan, Gallup wondered how many people were reading the paper and what section they enjoyed the most. To answer these questions, Gallup began the unprecedented practice of asking readers for their opinions on the newspaper. It seems that Gallup inspired the first CX survey as well!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like any tool, improper use can be problematic. A look at polls is incomplete without recognizing the danger of poor methodology. One of the most notable polling fiascos was Gallup\u2019s infamous presidential polling attempt. In 1948, newspapers across America read: \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1992\/10\/28\/opinion\/l-truman-didn-t-have-to-overtake-dewey-866092.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dewey Defeats Truman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d based on the polling results from Gallup and other polling groups. The reality was a stark defeat for both Dewey and polls that day as history reveals that Truman was the true winner of that election. Quota sampling, the method Gallup used to get those incorrect results, was retired after that disaster.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Growth of Polls<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the setback, Gallup\u2019s polling enterprise grew into the Gallup Poll organization, also known as the American Institute of Public Opinion. Today, the organization&#8217;s<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/corporate\/212381\/who-we-are.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">self-definition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is: \u201cWe know more about the will of employees, customers, students and citizens than anyone in the world. . . And we use that knowledge to create transformation.\u201d Through the power of polls, Gallup tells us, they not only know our opinion on things like coffee or government, but Gallup knows how to use that information to influence our world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While not always the most reliable predictors, polls act as great thermometers to check the temperature of a certain population. Gallup\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/9967\/timeline-polling-history-events-shaped-united-states-world.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Timeline Of Polling History<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offers 65 years\u2019 worth of evidence on the usefulness of polls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polls have become vital for elections today.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/topic\/politics-policy\/us-elections-voters\/election-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pew Research Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, another well-known polling organization, explains that for the key players of democracy\u2014citizens, journalists, and candidates\u2014polls are enormously useful.
