Business became largely focused around one goal: maximizing profit. Massive economic growth followed, millionaires were made, and the modern workforce was created \u2014 the most depressed, flighty, anxious, stressed workforce in history.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>But that is slowly changing. We\u2019re beginning to prioritize roles where we feel valued, where colleagues and leaders want the best for us personally, where the company\u2019s goals include profit <em>and<\/em> employee wellbeing. We\u2019re building empathy-first businesses.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>And surprise surprise, these businesses are <strong>flying<\/strong>. Having empathy means encouraging your employees and colleagues to acknowledge and share these feelings. To unburden themselves and feel comfortable, and safe, in work \u2014 without fear of reprisal.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>Four ideas for employing empathy at work:<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>When a coworker looks visibly upset, ask them to come with you to a private area and tell them you\u2019re willing to listen without judgment.<\/li>\n<li>If someone challenges your idea in a meeting, don\u2019t just shut them down; ask them to elaborate and try to judge both ideas equally.<\/li>\n<li>Managers should have regular one-to-ones with team members. Not only to ask how they are and if they have any concerns to air \u2014 but to convince them, genuinely, that they\u2019ll act on those concerns.<\/li>\n<li>When a coworker has good news, or is excited about something, ask them about it and try to get excited for them \u2014 even if you don\u2019t really understand.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What it means to be an empathetic company<\/h2>\n<p>It can be as simple as this: <strong>allow your staff to be vulnerable at work<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>How many of us could <em>truly<\/em> say we have that luxury? How many of us will freely admit to huge mistakes, confess our uncertainty about a project, or share that we\u2019re struggling to concentrate at work because of lingering relationship problems at home?<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>Within many companies, even taking a sick day is looked down on as \u2018lazy\u2019 or \u2018weak\u2019. If a company\u2019s culture doesn\u2019t permit feelings, being an \u201cempathetic company\u201d is literally impossible. But whether you\u2019re a leader or the lowest-ranked staff member, you can still help others feel comfortable at work.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>Even if some don\u2019t recognize the effort you\u2019re making, it could be life-changing for those affected\u2014even if they never mention it.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>A more visual example of empathy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A typical manager walks into their team member\u2019s office. They say, \u201cHey, your numbers are down for the third quarter in a row. We\u2019ve talked about this before \u2014 if you can\u2019t get your numbers back up, I can\u2019t guarantee what\u2019ll happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>An <em>empathetic <\/em>manager walks into the same office. And if that\u2019s not bad enough, this also drags down employee performance \u2014 obviously, because who\u2019s at their best in this environment?<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>We are seeing a generation of workers demanding treatment as something more than an expendable commodity. Empathy as a cornerstone of business and management <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/ashoka\/2013\/05\/30\/why-empathy-is-the-force-that-moves-business-forward\/?sh=121cfa8b169e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">isn\u2019t even a new idea<\/a>. The problem is that sacrificing people for profit is simply more popular.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>For a business to thrive in 2021 and beyond, it has to meet its employees where they are: it needs to provide support, be less judgmental, and have two-way communication.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h2>What empathy is <em>not<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>One article called empathy \u201ca customer-service clincher, a killer sales technique, a talent magnet, and a make-or-break crisis management tool\u201d \u2014 this person has missed the point entirely. Because yes having empathy helps the business, but it\u2019s not a metric or a hack, it\u2019s a default human setting that we\u2019ve been conditioned to switch <strong>off<\/strong> when we enter the workplace.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>We\u2019ve created environments where employees are terrified of admitting mistakes or voicing concerns. No one is allowed to feel vulnerable (which means to feel <em>human<\/em>) because they fear for their jobs.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>Companies practicing empathy don\u2019t have this problem.<\/strong> They promote people to leadership roles and <em>teach<\/em> them how to lead; they allow employees to voice concerns without fear of redundancy and guide them closer to their natural potential.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>The fact that anyone needs to argue the need for empathy is staggering. The fact it feels alien or uncomfortable or <em>wrong<\/em> says much about how we run our businesses. This is hard stuff. You need to take in feelings you don\u2019t like or want, in order to acknowledge and understand them.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>We often hear that \u201cThe quietest person in the room is usually the smartest.\u201d Maybe, but they probably are the most empathetic\u2014they\u2019re focused on listening and trying to understand what others are saying, and that, in essence, is what it means to be an empathy-first company.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>Meeting people where they are can be an exhausting, uncomfortable experience. Sometimes, even when you think you\u2019re right, the empathetic approach is learning to understand, respect, and implement another individual\u2019s point of view rather than forcing your own.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>If empathy sounds too complicated for you, then remember what we\u2019re really talking about is <strong>relationships<\/strong>.
