What sort of report do you need to generate, and who needs to see it?<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h2>Start with reports<\/h2>\n<p>Starting with reports means determining the goal of your project \u2013 that is, why are you doing it?<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Informing a decision<\/li>\n<li>Testing a hypothesis<\/li>\n<li>Uncovering new information<\/li>\n<li>Benchmarking performance<\/li>\n<li>Following instructions<\/li>\n<li>Maintaining inertia<\/li>\n<li>Keeping busy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Use your goal to drive the design. For example, if your goal is to track trends in employee satisfaction over the long term, it might be a good idea to incorporate questions around hybrid work. Thinking about these considerations in advance will drive the questions you ask.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h2>Results vs. reports<\/h2>\n<p>Simply put, your raw data may be interesting, but it\u2019s the context of that data \u2013 and the meaning or insights you derive from it \u2013 that will make a difference.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Information is most useful when it is actionable<\/li>\n<li>Good results (raw data) inspire the rest of the project<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Next, it\u2019s critical to make decisions around how you want to present your data. Consider who you are speaking to with your report: Who is your audience, and what do they care about? These considerations will help determine how you will ultimately present your data, whether in the form of charts, graphs, a narrative outline, or some combination of these.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h2>The art of narrative findings<\/h2>\n<p>At this point in the process, you\u2019ll begin to hone your information into a digestible form that will capture the spirit and value of the story.
