For example, a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gu.se\/en\/news\/ageism-common-in-the-tech-industry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">survey<\/a> by the University of Gothenburg found that tech workers over 35 are considered \u201cold\u201d in the industry.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>Here, ageism may manifest as a bias towards younger workers who are perceived as more tech-savvy or innovative. This bias can make it difficult for older workers to find and keep jobs in the industry, even if they have the necessary skills and experience.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-spacer\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>The importance of diversity<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>Now, let\u2019s take a minute to discuss\u2026 why is diversity important to get right?<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>A lack of diversity can create a negative experience for employees from underrepresented groups, leading to feelings of isolation and exclusion.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>To address this gap and create an inclusive workplace culture in tech companies, it&#8217;s important to focus on creating a DEI centricity at all levels of the organization, providing support and resources for employees from diverse backgrounds.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-spacer\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"sogo-divider\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Check workplace inclusivity with our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sogolytics.com\/survey-templates\/employee\/inclusion-survey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DEI survey template<\/a>!<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"sogo-divider\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"div-spacer\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>What have companies done?<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>Most large tech companies can easily pull out a laundry list of things they\u2019ve done to try to improve diversity and inclusion.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Google<\/strong><\/span><\/em>, for example, has a long list of diversity-related initiatives, such as:<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Launched initiatives such as <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/womentechmakers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Women Techmakers<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/outreach-initiatives\/diversity\/black-googler-network-fuels-inclusion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Black Googler Network<\/em><\/a> to support and advance women and Black employees<\/li>\n<li>Increased <a href=\"https:\/\/about.google\/belonging\/diversity-annual-report\/2022\/hiring\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hiring of underrepresented groups<\/a>, including Black employees (9.4% in 2022, compared to 8.8% in 2021)<\/li>\n<li>Implemented <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2017\/8\/9\/16122072\/google-diversity-bias-training-james-damore-memo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unconscious bias training<\/a> for employees involved in hiring and performance evaluations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, numbers don\u2019t lie &#8211; Google&#8217;s most recent diversity report from 2022 shows that only 37.5% of their workforce is made up of women, and only 9.4% are Black and 9.0% are Latinx employees.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>This shows that despite the company\u2019s efforts, there is still a long way to go in terms of achieving true diversity and inclusion at Google.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-spacer\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>Positive examples to learn from<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>While diversity is an issue that most tech firms grapple with, there are a select few companies that have been able to demonstrate tangible progress through their initiatives and programs. Two such examples are Salesforce, which has made a commitment to gender pay equity, and Intel, which has set targets for increasing the representation of women and underrepresented minorities in its workforce.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Salesforce:<\/strong><\/span><\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/press-releases\/2016\/09\/15\/salesforce-appoints-tony-prophet-as-chief-equality-officer-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Back in 2016<\/a>, the company made a commitment to achieving workforce diversity, and has set targets for increasing the representation of women, people of color, and other underrepresented groups in its workforce.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>The company has also implemented programs aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion, such as its Racial Equality and Justice Task Force and its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/representation-matters-salesforces-annual-racial-equality-summit-set-for-july-22\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Equality Summit<\/a>, which brings together leaders from diverse backgrounds to discuss strategies for promoting equality.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>In part due to its commitment to diversity and inclusion, Salesforce was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/salesforce-is-ranked-1-on-fortunes-100-best-companies-to-work-for-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ranked #1<\/a> on Fortune&#8217;s 100 Best Companies to Work For list in 2018.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>On top of that, Salesforce has also been recognized as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatplacetowork.com\/certified-company\/1000226\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one of the &#8220;Best Workplaces for Diversity&#8221;<\/a> by Great Place to Work for several years in a row. It has also received accolades for its LGBTQ+ inclusion efforts, including a perfect score on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/salesforce-earns-recognition-from-forbes-and-human-rights-campaign-for-diversity-and-equality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Human Rights Campaign&#8217;s Corporate Equality Index<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Intel:<\/strong><\/span><\/em> Like Salesforce, Intel made a significant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/01\/07\/technology\/intel-budgets-300-million-for-diversity.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">commitment to increasing diversity<\/a> in its workforce, and set ambitious targets for increasing the representation of women and underrepresented minorities in its workforce.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>The company also implemented a range of programs aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion, such as its Diversity in Technology initiative, which aims to increase the representation of women and underrepresented minorities in the tech industry, and its Intel Capital Diversity Fund, which invests in companies led by women and underrepresented minorities.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>Intel\u2019s efforts in this area have obviously paid off &#8211; it was recognized as one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anaaimm.net\/news\/the-2019-diversityinc-top-50-companies-for-diversity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DiversityInc&#8217;s Top 50 Companies<\/a> for Diversity in 2019.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>That aside, Intel has also been named as one of Fortune&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rankingthebrands.com\/Brand-detail.aspx?brandID=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;World&#8217;s Most Admired Companies&#8217;<\/a> and has received accolades for its diversity and inclusion efforts from organizations such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intel.com\/content\/www\/us\/en\/newsroom\/article\/intel-recognized-workplace-equality-inclusion.html#gs.vvz1xc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Human Rights Campaign<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h2>Mental health and well-being<\/h2>\n<p>Another blind spot that tech companies face? This can include measures such as:<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>Setting realistic deadlines<\/li>\n<li>Encouraging employees to take breaks and vacations<\/li>\n<li>Promoting flexible work arrangements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">One example of a company that has taken a proactive approach to employee well-being is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><strong>Buffer<\/strong><\/em><\/span>, a social media management platform.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Buffer has <a href=\"https:\/\/buffer.com\/resources\/ama-4-day-workweek\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">implemented a 4-day work week<\/a> policy for employees, and has also instituted a policy where team members are encouraged to take <a href=\"https:\/\/buffer.com\/resources\/time-off-global-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a minimum of three weeks off per year<\/a> (on the flip side, there\u2019s no maximum time off recommendation).<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Another example is <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Asana<\/strong><\/span><\/em>, a work management platform, which has implemented a <a href=\"https:\/\/wavelength.asana.com\/workstyle-no-meeting-wednesdays\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cNo Meeting Wednesdays\u201d<\/a> system in order to give their employees \u201cflow time\u201d during which they can work with fewer distractions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-spacer\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">Creating a sense of purpose and meaning<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Finally, many tech companies struggle with creating a sense of purpose and meaning for employees.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">While some employees may be motivated by the company&#8217;s mission or the potential for financial gain, others may be looking for more meaningful work that aligns with their personal values.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-spacer\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>The importance of purpose and meaning<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This one\u2019s pretty straightforward &#8211; creating a sense of purpose and meaning for employees is important because it can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sogolytics.com\/blog\/top-ways-to-improve-employee-engagement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increase employee engagement<\/a>, motivation, and job satisfaction.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Simply put, no one wants to feel like a cog in a machine.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">When employees feel that their work has a larger purpose and that they are contributing to something meaningful, they are more likely to be committed to their work and go above and beyond what is expected of them.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This leads to higher productivity, better performance, and ultimately, better business outcomes for the company.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Additionally, having a sense of purpose and meaning in one&#8217;s work can also improve overall well-being and mental health (bringing us back to our previous point on mental health!)<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-spacer\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"sogo-divider\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>How do your employees feel? Ask them with our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sogolytics.com\/survey-templates\/employee\/company-culture-survey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">company culture survey template<\/a>!<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sogo-divider\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"div-spacer\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>What have companies done?<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s common practice for companies to try to create a culture of purpose and impact by promoting social responsibility and sustainability, and offering opportunities for employees to volunteer and give back to their communities.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>However, not all corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives are effective.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>The key lies in finding initiatives that align with a company&#8217;s values and mission, and that are meaningful and engaging for employees.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>Examples of companies that have done a good job at creating a culture of purpose through CSR activities include <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><strong>Patagonia<\/strong><\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>We\u2019re pretty sure you\u2019ve heard of Patagonia &#8211; it\u2019s a well-known outdoor apparel company that has a strong commitment to environmental sustainability, and it\u2019s known for having a great company culture as well.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>Patagonia runs a number of CSR activities, such as their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.circularx.eu\/en\/cases\/34\/patagonia-worn-wear-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Worn Wear&#8221; program<\/a>, which encourages customers to repair and reuse their clothing instead of buying new items.
