When explaining why the United States\u2019s economy is growing faster than other developed countries, some economists point to our job market. We\u2019re seeing \u201csolid employment growth\u201d and employers wanting to hold on \u201ctheir prized talent pool,\u201d according to EY\u2019s chief economist<\/a>. At the same time, our job market is evolving. For those looking for work in 2024, these are the most sought-after job skills for your skills-based resumes.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in February 2024 reported 353,000<\/a> jobs added in January (well beyond expectations of 176,000<\/a> new jobs), rising wages, and an unemployment rate of 3.7% for the third month in a row. Meanwhile, the working world is changing; employees need to adapt to the shifting landscape by highlighting that they have the skills for future jobs.<\/p>\n

Top 2024 job-specific skills<\/h2>\n

Many voices weigh in with predictions of the top job-specific skills we\u2019ll see each year. We\u2019ve reviewed several round-ups to share the overlap.<\/p>\n

Professional networking site LinkedIn annually reviews its own data to rank the most in-demand skills. In its 2024 survey<\/a> of 1 billion members across 200 regions and countries, the company emphasized the pace of change. They found “over the last 12 months, members have added 680 million skills to their profiles, up\u202f80% year-over-year.\u201d<\/p>\n

The number one skill for LinkedIn? Communication, which also ranks on other lists. Futurist Bernard Marr wrote in Forbes<\/a>, \u201cNow more than ever, there’s a need for those who can identify messaging opportunities and bridge communication gaps across organizations.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the same time, he connected human communication skills<\/a> with the need for data analytics and the ability to communicate with machines \u201cin the way that gets the best results.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s largely because Generative AI is another top job skill for the future. With tools like ChapGPT making it easier to automate tasks and save time, employers are expected to seek people who know how to fully leverage the power of artificial intelligence and manage the change.<\/p>\n

Not everyone needs to use generative AI<\/a> to get their jobs done. Yet, a Fast Company author also emphasized the importance of data literacy and analytics<\/a> (also no. 6 on LinkedIn\u2019s list). \u201cYou don\u2019t have to be an expert at handling and analyzing huge data sets to offer critical insights,\u201d wrote Andrew Fennell, founder and director of StandOut CV. \u201cBut employers do want to see that you can, at the very least, understand the importance of data to the business and recognize some of the most basic terminology.\u201d<\/p>\n

Top job skill of the moment<\/h2>\n

In discussing the impact of AI and digital transformation, LinkedIn also highlighted\u00a0adaptability<\/strong> as a \u201ctop skill of the moment\u201d. Unsurprisingly, the job skill also turned up in other predictions. With the current pace of change, LinkedIn\u2019s authors described \u201cadaptability and agility<\/strong>\u201d as \u201cmission-critical for both people and organizations.\u201d The StandOut CV experts also identified \u201cbeing resilient and adaptable<\/strong>\u201d as \u201ca crucial skill that employers are looking for in their workforce.\u201d<\/p>\n

Problem-solving and creativity<\/a><\/strong> also rank high as sought-after skills. They relate closely to adaptability after all. Employers want to see that you can meet fresh challenges and solve problems as they arise. You\u2019ll also see calls for collaboration<\/strong> and teamwork<\/strong>, which you\u2019ll need to demonstrate when working with colleagues at work to drive tangible results.<\/p>\n

The one main other common thread across the predictions we reviewed? Attention to sustainability<\/strong>. With companies adapting to new government regulations and increased customer demand for eco-friendly business practices, understanding and being able to speak to the role of green initiatives can help potential employees demonstrate their worth.<\/p>\n

How to demonstrate these strengths on your skills-based resume<\/h2>\n

Knowing the most in-demand skills for 2026, you\u2019ll probably plan to add all that you can to your resume. Yet writing the words \u201cgreat communicator\u201d or \u201cadaptable\u201d isn\u2019t enough to make you stand out. After all, others are reading the same lists! You need to find ways to highlight these attributes on your skills-based resume.<\/p>\n
