Since 2021, 18 states have adopted universal or near-universal school choice programs, and 16 more have enacted limited versions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>To understand how families are responding,\u00a0Sogolytics\u00a0surveyed 534 U.S. parents and guardians of K\u201312 students on their\u00a0perceptions\u00a0of school climate, leadership, communication, and responsiveness, and on how those\u00a0perceptions\u00a0shape their satisfaction and their intent to stay. The results suggest public districts hold a stronger position than the current\u00a0policy\u00a0conversation often implies, but that retention rests on factors that extend well beyond academic performance.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h2>What is Driving Enrollment?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>When families were asked what influenced their\u00a0initial\u00a0enrollment decision, the top three factors were convenience and flexibility (51%), academic reputation or test scores (35%), and cost or affordability (34%). Most families exploring alternatives are moving to a different public school district or non-traditional public\u202foptions, not out of it, reshaping retention strategies\u202ffrom defending against private-school competition to competing with other public and flexible learning\u202foptions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h2>The Takeaway<\/h2>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>For superintendents, school boards, and district leaders, the takeaway is less about responding to school choice expansion and more about the day-to-day work of aligning district investment with the\u00a0priorities\u00a0families rank highest.
