From this, leaders confront the same barriers: this is not representative of our community, engagement is failing, outreach is not landing, the community has tuned out, and this data is not\u00a0accurate.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>New national data suggests that\u00a0perception\u00a0and dismissing that data\u00a0may negatively\u00a0impact\u00a0family retention.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>A\u00a0Sogolytics\u00a0survey of 534 U.S. families with a child in K-12\u00a0schools\u00a0found that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/families%20that%20had%20already%20decided%20to%20leave%20their%20current%20schoo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">100% of\u00a0families\u00a0that had already decided to leave their current school<\/a>\u00a0had provided input to that school in the previous twelve months.\u00a0This input was provided through\u00a0speaking with a staff member,\u00a0surveys, town hall meetings, emails,\u00a0and\u00a0more.\u00a0Among families with no intent to leave,\u00a079% provided input. Departing families engaged at higher rates than committed ones.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>They were also more likely to say the school had not acted on\u00a0their\u00a0input.\u00a019%\u00a0of committed families disagreed that their school had acted on family input. Disaggregate\u00a0input\u00a0by school, grade, and\u00a0demographic\u00a0subgroups.\u00a0For example, this study revealed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sogolytics.com\/blog\/engaging-lep-families\/\">English learner families were\u00a0the group most likely to be looking for\u00a0alternative schools<\/a>. If the district only\u00a0looks at\u00a0total participation\u00a0numbers,\u00a0leadership\u00a0will\u00a0never see that insight and know to\u00a0effectively\u00a0act on that data.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>Second, is the district responding? The finding that departing families were more likely to say their school had not acted on their input points to a specific measurement:\u00a0whether families see the loop close.<\/p>\n<div class=\"div-minispacer\"><\/div>\n<p>Strong communication practices are an integral part of family retention and the feedback cycle.\u00a0When asked what matters most in evaluating school fit, 88%\u00a0of families rated\u00a0strong\u00a0communication\u00a0with families as important or\u00a0very important. Stop\u00a0assessing\u00a0engagement\u00a0and the utility of the feedback collected\u00a0by participation rate\u00a0alone. Start\u00a0assessing\u00a0it by loop closure.
