The Story

The challenge

To improve employee engagement, Sims Limited needed an effective way to communicate

Sims Limited wanted to conduct a multilingual worldwide study that would deliver baseline measures and actionable insights on how to improve their employee experience. Knowing what they wanted to focus on, improving employee engagement and experiences, would lead to greater success. What they required was a solution that could meet their needs and do it while keeping their data safe and secure.

They wanted a company that could incorporate proven employee experience methodology and ensure that their surveys would deliver rich data about who employees are, what drives their engagement, and how Sims could craft meaningful initiatives that would make a difference. “We wanted to make sure whoever we chose would work with us to design our project and address concerns around anonymity and survey fatigue so we could get better responses,” shared Brad Baker, Group Chief Human Resources Officer at Sims Limited.

The global distribution of the Sims workforce was a special consideration for their employee engagement survey. Sims takes pride in the diversity of its employees and communities, and it was important for inclusivity that the project worked across several countries, seven different time zones, and 15 languages. It was a tall order, and as they went searching through different vendors, they weren’t sure anyone could meet their needs.

Until they came across Sogolytics. While Sogolytics’ automatic translation features laid the groundwork, they offered to have a native-language speaker review of all the questions, email copy, and informational text. It was a great start to an advantageous partnership that didn’t stop at good translations.

The solution

The creation of the first-ever global employee engagement survey has set Sims on a solid path to take action on the initial findings based on what matters the most. This helps them identify opportunities for improvement, and sets into motion the plan to continue year over year monitoring of the progress during their change management program.

“In cases like these, HR can galvanize thinking at the senior-executive level by delivering business-oriented insights,” says Brad Baker, Group Chief Human Resources Officer at Sims Limited. “Sogolytics’ partnering approach ensured that the survey brought in the best results from our employees based all over the world,” Baker adds.

With a strong data collection instrument and driver-oriented reporting, a better picture emerges on a workforce’s engagement level – no matter where they work – and the resulting insights helped both general and HR business leaders take the right steps toward their goals.

The result

From the start of this survey - this first comprehensive measurement of employee engagement - the joint Sims/Sogolytics team knew the criticality of how insights would be presented. The Sogolytics team worked to translate the internal research requirements gathered from across the Sims organization into the survey design and its reporting structure.

The dashboard and reports helped Sims to slice and dice the data into different cuts to tailor the results for all the separate internal reviewers. Because of Sogolytics’ capability of delivering role-based dashboards, a variety of different data visualization techniques, and easy one-click monitoring of results, it was possible for Sims leaders to each review their own most important data points. With such a distributed team, more local data segments provided more actionable insights.

Most importantly, Sims knew the level of their employee engagement in respect to the internal changes. The team presented key engagement findings across a number of demographics such as gender, tenure, role, geographic region, etc. In addition, the Sogolytics solution provided a correlation of key drivers against engagement, which helped Sims prioritize their actions. The driver dimensions included Communication, Purpose and Direction, Career Growth and Training, Work Environment, and Feedback and Recognition.

Our project manager was knowledgeable, very understanding of what we were looking for, and she really knew how to use what Sogolytics had available to achieve the results that we wanted.
