For example, you might use this question type to ask participants to list three cities they\u2019ve visited recently. Along with the option to set formatting validation on specific boxes (email address, numbers, etc.), the Multiple Text Box provides more structure than a standard Text Box \u2013 improving data quality.<\/p>\n<p>To add a Multiple Text Box question to your project, drag and drop the question type from the panel on the left to the correct spot on the right. As you build this question, you\u2019ll see the following options:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sub-question<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Add the text prompts\/label for each field or leave this blank if the prompts are clearly identified in the question.<\/li>\n<li>To add more text boxes \/ sub-questions, click the plus icon to the right of the text box field.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Select Sub-question Format<\/strong>:\u00a0For each Text Box field, you can set a different format. You\u2019ll see the following formats:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>General:<\/strong> This format allows the participant to enter any type of text. Based on your requirements and goals, choose from a variety of formatting options.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Limit total character count <\/strong><br \/>\nChoose how many characters participants should be allowed to enter and you\u2019ll see this total converted into an estimated number of words, for your reference. You may also choose whether to display the available character count to participants.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Adjust height and width<\/strong><br \/>\nDecide the size of the text field that participants will see, setting the width by percentage of display and height by number of lines.<\/li>\n<li id=\"section-1\"><strong>Allow only short answer text<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/30.0.2_D2.png\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This option is available for only Text Box \u2013 General format. Selecting this option means that participants will be able to provide only short text answers.<\/li>\n<li>When analyzing results, these short answers can be used to segment responses in <a href=\"\/help\/overview-omni-report\/\">the Omni Report<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"example-block-container blue-shade\">\n        <span class=\"example-block-content\"><span class=\"example-block-header\">For example:<\/span><br \/>\nAllow participants to enter their own location rather than choosing from a list, then segment responses by location in your report. Or, if you&#8217;d like to report on participants\u2019 favorite brands but want to avoid biasing their responses, you might choose to provide them with a blank field rather than a list of options.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n  <\/div>\n<div class=\"sogo-help-info-box\"><i class=\"fal fa-info-circle\"><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To reduce the margin of error, a maximum of 30 characters and a minimum of 100 character can be set when short answer text is enabled.<\/li>\n<li>Once this option is enabled, it cannot be changed once responses have been received.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Currency:<\/strong> This format requires the participant to enter a number within a range that you set. If you do not set a range, any number will be accepted. You can choose to display a currency symbol by checking \u2018Append currency symbol\u2019 and choosing a currency from the drop down menu.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Email: <\/strong>This format requires the participant to enter an email address including an @ sign and a period. Check the box to require participants to enter the address twice for validation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Phone Number: <\/strong>This format requires the participant to enter a phone number in the format (201) 555-0123.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Number: <\/strong>This format requires the participant to enter a valid number. You may set an expected range by identifying high and low values. If you do not set a range, any number will be accepted. You can also choose to accept only integer number by checking on \u2018Allow only integer value\u2019. This will accept only numbers without decimal.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Percentage:<\/strong> This format requires the participant to enter a valid number. You can also restrict answers to be within a given range. If you do not set a range, any number will be accepted.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Social Security Number:<\/strong> This format requires the participant to enter numbers in the ###-##-#### format.<\/li>\n<li><strong>U.S. ZIP Code:<\/strong> This format requires the participant to enter exactly five digits.<\/li>\n<li><strong>U.S. ZIP Code + 4: <\/strong>This format requires the participant to enter exactly five or nine digits.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Custom:<\/strong> This option allows you to create a customized required format. Enter \u2018#\u2019 for numbers and \u2018@\u2019 for alphabetic characters. For example, if your organization uses employee IDs like mmk777, you may require the format @@@###.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve set the format for a particular field, you may choose to click the arrow icon to apply the same settings to all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Within this question type, the following options are available: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"\/help\/how-to-apply-data-population\/\"><strong>Data Population:<\/strong><\/a> Pre-fill the response during distribution or post-fill after participation.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/help\/how-to-mark-question-as-mandatory\/\"><strong>Mandatory Response<\/strong><\/a>: Require participants to respond to a critical question.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/help\/encouraged-response\/\"><strong>Encouraged Response<\/strong><\/a>: Nudge participants who skip a question to reconsider by displaying a customized request message.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/help\/question-hint\/\"><strong>Question Hint<\/strong>:<\/a> Add extra information that can help provide clarification for participants.<\/li>\n<li>Vertical spacing between Text Boxes<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sub-Question location<\/strong>: Choose where to display your Sub-Question relative to the text field.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/help\/how-to-set-up-answer-sequence\/\"><strong>Sub-Question Sequence<\/strong>:<\/a> Choose to rotate, randomize, or display answer options as entered.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"how-to-split-survey-answer-options\/\"><strong>Column Format<\/strong>:<\/a> Choose to display Text Boxes in columns.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"how-to-add-image-multimedia-survey-questions\/\"><strong>Add Media<\/strong>:<\/a> Add an accompanying image, video, or audio file.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Multiple Text Box question type is perfect when you\u2019d like to ask participants to provide responses to a series of related open-ended questions.
