Each employee is unique.

They all have different strengths, needs, preferences, and even struggles. To help your employees perform their best, you need to offer support and design employee wellness initiatives that cater to their unique requirements.

Up until a few years ago, wellness programs were seen as a way to attract top talent and improve retention, but goal was to simply tick the box when it came to employee value propositions. The pandemic changed it all.

After the impact of COVID-19, employers saw the importance of workplace wellness programs. When done right, these wellness programs not only helped employees reduce healthcare costs, but also improved their physical and mental wellbeing, nurtured productivity, and improved employee loyalty and retention.

Why personalize employee wellness?

Every interaction we have with businesses caters to our preferences, whether it’s our social media feed, product recommendations, or even the emails that we get. It’s all about us as individuals.

Today, personalization isn’t just a “good-to-have”, it’s an expectation. This is primarily because personalized experiences offer more value. So, while personalized customer experiences are already the norm, why not add that to employee experiences as well?

Employees want to stay with employers that truly care about them.

You never know how the insights you will uncover when employees feel confident enough to be candid.

2. Spot trends

Sometimes employees might not want to discuss their personal circumstances. Whether it’s health (both physical and mental), work-life balance, or something else entirely – they may want to keep it private.

In such cases, it helps to have access to a variety of benefits when the need arises. But how would you know what to offer?

Look for trends in anonymous feedback to better identify the overall needs within your organization. This will help you design a wellness program that has benefits customized to your employees.

You can then raise awareness about these benefits, empowering employees to take advantage of what they need when they need it, helping them put their best foot forward every day.

3. Tailor the benefits

We all know the saying, “birds of a feather flock together”, and this might just be true for your organization.

By identifying overall trends in employee preferences, you can deviate from the usual employee wellness offerings to give your employees something that they would value more.

If your employees are often in high-stress situations and struggle with burnout, perhaps offering a “pajama day” or a “mental health day” once every other month might be a great start.

If like Etsy, you realize that your employees will likely have fun hobbies on the side, you can give them some dedicated days off each year to just focus on their small business.
